Our Guides

Joe Carmack

Joe enjoys hikes of all types in the Southwestern United States and internationally. His favorite trails include the Grand Canyon, the Shenandoah National Park along the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, and Wadi Rum near Petra Jordan. He enjoys other cultures and has lived abroad for 3 years studying Spanish, French and Italian. Now settled in Arizona, he is thrilled to help other travelers experience the wonders of the natural world.

Pat Brown

Pat Brown has been exploring the Grand Canyon since 2007. Ever since a family trip in 1990 Pat has been fascinated with the beauty, diversity, and history of the Grand Canyon. Some of his favorite spots to take Canyon visitors include the Cave of the Domes, Ribbon Falls, Plateau Point, and Mooney Falls. If you end up on one of his trips, be sure to ask him to tell his favorite stories about "Captain" John Hance. When not in the guiding, Pat can be found teaching 8th grade science, trail running, backcountry skiing, practicing his banjo, or chasing his two beautiful daughters, Willa and Teller.

Brian Patrick

Brian was born in New York City and was raised along the east coast before moving to the American West in his early 20's. A deep relationship with wilderness blossomed. Exposure to the wide open spaces of the west inspired him to study the natural sciences and develop his skill at photography. It is also, in part, what has led him to become a yoga teacher. The growth that he has experienced through exploring his relationship with the natural world has led him to work to help others develop comfort in wandering through the wilderness.

Tim King

Tim has lived in the desert southwest his whole life, and has been scrambling around outside for almost as long. He works not only as a hiking guide, but also as a ski instructor and climbing guide. It was through climbing that he discovered his passion for the outdoor life: if he isn't guiding for us, he will surely be out on some cliff somewhere pulling down hard. Tim is also pursuing a geology degree at NAU with the intention of becoming a Paleontologist, and loves to interpret the canyon walls for our clients. His two favorite places are the Grand Canyon and Yosemite, go figure: more hiking and climbing than anyone could complete in 10 lifetimes!

Chelsea Thomas

Chelsea grew up in Springfield Illinois and moved to Arizona and the Grand Canyon in 1999. Her love for hiking and backpacking the Southwest developed as she spent 2 seasons working on the North Rim of Grand Canyon and another 2 years working at Phantom Ranch. Some of her other favorites locations are Death Valley National Park and Glacier National Park. Chelsea has been a backpacking and hiking guide for the last 11 years. She has a great understanding and respect for Grand Canyon and loves to share this with her guests. When she is not guiding, she can be found on a variety of trails with her dog Chewy!

Brian Nelson

Brian Nelson grew up outside Los Angeles. He moved to Arizona to attend NAU in Flagstaff, and graduated with a degree in Parks and Recreation Management, with an emphasis in Park Protection. Since moving to Flagstaff he has fallen in love with the Southwest. He is also an Eagle Scout, an avid rock climber and a backpacker. Brian cares deeply about the safety and enjoyment of his guests, and he's extremely knowledgeable about the natural and cultural history of the Grand Canyon and the Southwest. Brian's goal is to provide the best experience possible and to create a lifelong memory for his guests.
