Adventure Details

The most casual hike to a backcountry lake in the Bitterroot! Camas Lake Trail starts off on an old logging road with scenic views of the Bitterroot Valley. There are many opportunities to see wildflowers and wildlife along the trail. If you get hungry along the way, you can forage for wild raspberries and huckleberries if they are in season. The lake is small, but picturesque. A large area of granite rockfall neighbors a grassy meadow, surrounded by rocky cliffs and the dense forest make up the amazing backdrop of Camas Lake. This hike is short enough to day hike, but enjoyable enough to stay a night or two. Kidney lake is a short way from Camas and makes for a great day hike to yet another backcountry mountain lake. A perfect choice for those who are new to backpacking and seeking the thrill of adventure! *Route Variation - Our specific hiking route and campsites on each departure are dependent upon permit availability.

Adventure Itinerary

Day 1

We will meet you at our Missoula hotel partner and drive to the Bitterroot National Forest. The first day of our hiking tour in the Bitterroot begins at the Camas Lake Lake Trailhead. The trail is a mild 3 mile hike each way. The trail winds through the evergreen forest, over a few log bridge water crossings, wild berries and flowers can be enjoyed along the way to this beautiful mountain lake. Your expert guide will interpret the various rock formations, flora, and if you're lucky any fauna along the way. Once you have arrived at Camas Lake your guide will set up at one of the campsites near the Lake.

Day 2

Awake to fresh coffee and breakfast before heading out for our hike over to the nearby Kidney Lake. A short half mile away from Camas Lake with 500ft of elevation gain along the way. The trail is rugged and will require some bush-whacking on our way up to the lake, but the views are well worth the hike! After some time at Kidney Lake we'll make our way back down to the main trail and head back to the trailhead. You'll be back in Missoula with time to spare for a cold drink and hearty meal!
