Adventure Details

Going on a Discovery Treks Yosemite backpacking trip and tour is a once in a life time experience. For three days we’ll guide you on a hike to the famous and most popular location - Half Dome. Hiking there is so popular, even day hikers have to have a permit to hike the monolith, limiting the numbers of people hiking the great monolith. The difficulty of this hike increases significantly with your day hike up Half Dome.

Our Half Dome guided hike and Yosemite backpacking trip takes you off the beaten path to enjoy some less visited areas of the park - this means no paved trail where you might run into someone on a Segway and real hikers versus all the lookey-loos. It also means more time to experience the serenity of the park and see the places not on Instagram. You will then notice the contrast by night two when we camp at Little Yosemite Valley with everybody else.

*Route Variation - Our specific hiking route and campsites on each departure are dependent upon permit availability. Difficulty of the hike will also vary based on the route change. Additionally, the ascent up Half Dome is very challenging and is weather permitting.

What's included?

Adventure Itinerary

Day 1

After we meet the group for our Yosemite backpacking trip and tour, we head for the Mono Meadow or Glacier Point trailhead. We hike about 3.4 miles to Illilouette Creek for a night of camping off the beaten path to see the park without all the people. Once at camp, take a dip in the creek or there are some trails to explore for those wanting some additional hiking. Or, kick back by the fire and wait for the fire stomping Rhinos to show up. (That's a joke. There are no fire stomping Rhinos).

Day 2

Today we pack up and move camp to the Little Yosemite Valley. Expect camp to have 50+ people but there is an option to get away from the people by hiking a bit further and camp away from everyone. The hike today is approximately 5.5 miles to LYV. Once at camp, take a dip in the Merced River and rest up for our hike up Half Dome where we will enjoy the sunset as we summit! We find that summiting around sunset give us the best views and the fewest people as all of the Half Dome day hikers are typically gone by that point. Our hike up Half Dome will be 6.6 miles roundtrip but we will drop our big packs at camp and only take day packs for this hike.

Day 3

We get up for an early breakfast to pack up camp and head out back to our starting point. It is a beautiful 8 mile hike along the Panorama trail to get outstanding views of Half Dome, Nevada Falls, and the surrounding area before you say goodbye to Yosemite.
