Hermit to Monument Creek
Adventure Details
Our Hermit Creek/Monument Creek hike is the perfect hike if you have backpacked before or are already in great shape and want to experience the canyon in solitude. This 4 day backpacking tour goes in and out on the Hermits Rest trail staying at either or both the Hermit Creek Campground and/or the Monument Creek Campground. This hike will consist of 20-25 miles and will take you to some of the best lookout points and secluded campsites that the canyon has to offer.
Adventure Itinerary
Day 1:
Upon arrival to the South Rim you start hiking the Hermit trail, a trail constructed in 1911 by the Santa Fe Railroad, to give people access to the Colorado River. On our roughly 8-9 mile hike to camp, depending on permit availability, we will see spectacular views of Hermit Canyon. As we traverse above the Redwall, before we drop down to the tonto platform, we will see little, sporadic glimpses of the Colorado River and what tomorrow has in store. After getting onto the tonto platform we have a flatter hike to camp along either Hermit or Monument Creek. Either camp we stay at feels after descending 3,700 feet and soak those sore feet in the water. Hermit TH to Hermit Creek 8.2 Miles 3700 feet loss Hermit TH to Monument Creek 9.3 Miles 3700 feet lossDay 2:
After a relaxing morning we head to the Colorado River. While hiking past vast views of the Grand Canyon and the 160 foot sandstone Monument we descend into the dry creek bed of Monument Creek. Hiking on the tonto plateau and in the dry creek bed of Monument Creek the descent of 700 feet almost feels flat compared to yesterday. As the walls get higher as we get closer to the river the water from monument creek pops back up. As we walk along the water we start to hear the loud rumbling of Granite Rapids. As we are about to see the Colorado up and closer for the first time our guide turns out of the creek bed and takes us to a secluded camping area we will stay at for the night. Hermit Creek to Granite Rapids 4.6 Miles 700 feet loss Monument Creek to Granite Rapids 1.6 milesDay 3:
After yet another relaxing morning we head back up trail to break the ascent into two days. Granite Rapids to Hermit Creek 4.6 Miles 1600 feet gain Granite Rapids to Monument Creek 1.6 miles 700 feet gain.Day 4:
After two relaxing mornings it feels good to e on the trail early to beat the heat. As we climb up the Hermit trail we are shaded and the temps are cool. As we get closer to the Rim we are sporadically in the sun but it feels good. The trail is less crowded than one of the main trails so it is hard to know when we are close the Rim. With the cooler temps and our 4th day on the trail you will be surprised with the times it takes to go up the Hermit Trail. Hermit TH to Monument Creek 9.3 Miles 3700 feet loss Monument Creek to Hermit TH 9.3 Miles 3700 feet gain ***Due to permit availability, the specified itinerary and route maybe different.Pickup Locations
