History of the El Tovar Hotel: The Grand Canyon’s Crown Jewel

Perched on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, the El Tovar Hotel is more than just a place to stay — it’s a living piece of history. As one of the most iconic lodges in the National Park System, El Tovar has welcomed presidents, celebrities, authors, and explorers since it opened its doors in 1905. For over a century, this rustic yet elegant hotel has stood as a symbol of the Grand Canyon experience.

If you’re planning a Grand Canyon adventure with Discovery Treks, learning the El Tovar Hotel history adds a whole new layer of depth to your visit.

A Vision of Elegance in the Wild

The El Tovar Hotel was built by the Fred Harvey Company, in partnership with the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, to accommodate the increasing number of tourists arriving by train. At the time, the Grand Canyon was not yet a national park (it would become one in 1919), but it was rapidly growing in popularity.

Designed by Charles Whittlesey, El Tovar was intended to offer upscale accommodations in a rugged setting — a bold idea in the early 20th century. Built with native stone and Oregon pine, the hotel blends rustic charm with European refinement. It was named after Pedro de Tovar, a Spanish explorer believed to be among the first Europeans to learn of the Grand Canyon from the Hopi people.

A Hub for Famous Guests

Over the years, El Tovar has hosted a long list of notable figures, including:

  • President Theodore Roosevelt, a fierce advocate for preserving the Grand Canyon

  • Albert Einstein, who marveled at the Canyon’s geology

  • Zane Grey, author of western novels inspired by the American Southwest

  • Paul McCartney, who visited in more recent decades

Staying at El Tovar is like stepping back in time. Much of the hotel remains true to its original architecture and décor, including the grand lobby fireplace, mounted hunting trophies, and antique furnishings.

National Park Legacy

When the Grand Canyon became a national park in 1919, El Tovar became a centerpiece for the National Park lodging experience. Today, it is a National Historic Landmark, recognized for both its architecture and its cultural significance.

Located just steps from the Canyon’s rim, El Tovar offers guests unbeatable views, world-class dining, and a unique glimpse into the past. The hotel’s dining room, with its canyon-facing windows and rich wood paneling, continues to serve meals with the same elegance it did in the early 1900s.
