Why Hiking to The Havasu Falls Is A Great Idea for Your Next Holiday

One of the many amazing things about the Grand Canyon is the variety of experiences it offers any traveler willing to try something new. Hiking to the Havasupai Waterfalls, for example, offers you spectacular views as well as a slice of ancient history and a sense of how timeless this land really is. Here are a few reasons why you should consider this hike while planning your next holiday.

What makes the Havasupai Waterfalls special?

There are a number of reasons why travelers refer to these falls as the most dramatic, not just in the Grand Canyon but the entire Southwestern United States. In terms of geography alone, you get a sense of the layers built over thousands of years. The falls, created in drainages from the mighty Colorado River as they descend to the bottom, occur in the area known as Havasu Creek that some believe arose from a spring 30,000 years ago!

More than just jaw-dropping beauty

The spring that gives birth to Havasu Creek plunges over a series of steep drop-offs as it descends through the tallest, steepest geologic layer in the Grand Canyon known as the Red Wall. These drop-offs create the Havasupai Waterfalls, a name that roughly translates as ‘people of the blue-green waters.’ That the name is apt becomes obvious when one comes across the unique color of the water. Apparently, this is a result of it being stored in limestone caverns or aquifers underground for thousands of years. It leaches out minerals like calcium and magnesium from the limestone, which then saturate the water and reflect sunlight to create a shade of brilliant turquoise.

Havasu Creek and surrounding areas

When you hike to the Havasupai Waterfalls, you also get to check out ancient travertine rock formations created by mineral deposits throughout Havasu Canyon. There are also other interesting falls in the area like the New Navajo Falls and Fifty Foot Falls, the tall Mooney Falls and remote Beaver Falls, all in gorgeous terrain.
